As the Israelites journeyed toward the Promised Land, God called Moses to the top of Mount Sinai to receive laws that would set them apart as His special, chosen people. The people prepared themselves by purifying their bodies and clothes, then watched from the base of the smoke-covered mountain as God spoke with Moses. God provided ten commandments etched in stone, which included instructions to put Him first, honor parents, keep the Sabbath holy, and refrain from murder, theft, and lying. These rules were designed to show the people how to live holy lives and remain in a special relationship with God throughout their journey and beyond.
