After leaving Egypt, the Israelites began to complain to Moses and Aaron about the lack of food in the desert, wishing they were back in Egypt where they had bread and meat. In response, God promised to rain down bread from the skies, providing a flakey substance called “manna” every morning and quail in the evening. God gave specific instructions on how much to gather and tested their obedience by requiring them to gather twice as much on the sixth day so they could rest on the seventh. For forty years, God faithfully provided this daily nourishment until the Israelites finally reached the border of the promised land of Canaan.
